La Val Albariño has been selected as “Wine of the Week” by the website founded by British Master of Wine Jancis Robinson. In the article, journalist Tara Q Thomas highlights the wine’s versatility at the table, thanks to its citrus and saline notes.
The article briefly traces La Val’s history and its development since joining CVNE in 2023. Since then, a number of changes have been introduced in the vineyard, including regenerative viticulture practices and other initiatives aimed at restoring the vineyard ecosystem, driven by Oliver Weiss, who was named Viticulturist of the Year by Tim Atkin in his Rías Baixas report. These include sheep grazing, planting fruit trees and flowers around the vineyard perimeters, collaboration with universities, and research into reducing the use of herbicides.
This has been accompanied by renewed momentum in the winery, led by young winemaker Luis Garrido, who joined in spring 2025 and is behind the outstanding results achieved with La Val Albariño 2025. According to Thomas, in a challenging year such as 2025, Garrido has produced a wine that is “pure satin in texture and mouth-watering in flavour, fresh almond richness with gentle citrus spice and a sea-salt minerality.” She recommends pairing it with dishes made from fresh, seasonal ingredients from the farmers’ market.
